Introduction to Qingdao

Qingdao, the host city for the 29th Olympic Sailing Regatta in 2008, is a coastal city located between north latitude 3535' to 3709' and east longitude 11930' to 12100'. The city is seated with the Yellow Sea on the east and south, adjoins the cities of Yantai, Rizhao and Weifang to the northeast, southwest and west respectively, and faces North Korea, South Korea and Japan across the sea. The total area of Qingdao is 10,654 square kilometers with the urban area totaling 1,102 square kilometers. The population of Qingdao totals 7,104,900, while the urban population is 2,376,000.

Qingdao has a monsoon climate of north temperate zone with featuring  a marine climate, such as moist air, abundant rainfall and four distinctive seasons. It is neither too hot in summer nor too cold in winter. The annual average temperature is 12.2C. The hottest month is August with an average temperature of 25C and the coldest month is January  with an  average  temperature of  1.3C. The annual average rainfall is 775.6mm. Qingdao is a city ideally suitable for living and vacation.

The city is known as a summer resort with a rich historical background and natural beauty. The landscape of Qingdao is often described as the  pearl on the crown of the Yellow Sea. Qingdao is one of China's five largest ports and the only port with an annual handling capacity of 100 million tons of coal, ore, petroleum, containers and bulk cargo.

There are many tourist attractions in  Qingdao, including Mount Laoshan, bathing beaches and buildings with European and Japanese style. Many events, such as the Qingdao Foreign Economy and Trade Fair, the Qingdao International Beer Festival, the Love of  Sea Festival, the Cherry-blossom Festival and Summer of Qingdao (Arts Festival) are held annually, entertaining thousands of domestic and overseas visitors.

Qingdao is a major city for finance and foreign trade in Shandong province as well. Some of the local companies, such as Haier, Hisense, Tsingtao Brewery and Aucma, are widely recognized. Qingdao has established practical and extensive connections  with foreign countries and overseas organizations for economic cooperation and exchange, resulting in a stable increase  of business involving foreign economy and trade.

Introduction to Ocean University of China

Ocean University of China (formerly Ocean University of Qingdao) is a comprehensive university under the direct jurisdiction of the State Ministry of Education, offering courseworks in the fields of Economics, Liberal Arts, Medical Sciences (Pharmaceuticals), Management, Law, Sciences, Engineering and Agronomy. Ocean University of China (hereinafter referred to as OUC) is located in Qingdao, a renowned summer resort and an attractive historic tourist city of scenic beauty and temperate climate, convenient with an international airport for direct flights to Japan, Korea and Hongkong, etc.

The history of OUC can be traced back to 1924, when it was set up as the private Qingdao University. In 1959, it grew out of Shandong College of Oceanography and became one of the 13 "key" comprehensive universities in China in October 1960. In 1988, Shandong College of Oceanography was renamed for Ocean University of Qingdao with  Chairman Deng Xiaoping's calligraphy for it. In 2002, the university was renamed for Ocean University of China.

OUC has three campuses, Yushan campus, Fushan (Maidao) campus and Laoshan campus, respectively located in the city's downtown section and eastern hi-tech area. OUC consists of 22 colleges and departments that offer 131 programs conferring Master's degrees, 44 programs conferring Doctoral degrees and 7 programs for Postdoctoral research. There are over 20,000 registered students at OUC, including 4,500 Master's and Doctoral students and over 500 international students. Among the 2,300 faculty members there are many nationally and internationally recognized experts and scholars, 8 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and 5 academicians of Chinese Academy of Engineering. Student orientation is the education philosophy of OUC, stressing the cultivation of the students' personalities and the development of their special skills and interests.

One of the major activities of OUC has been its extensive participation in international academic exchanges. Since 1950s  OUC has begun to accept  international students, and now has developed close cooperative relations with over 30 universities. It is also one of the universities that receives scholarship support for international students from the Chinese government.

OUC is now offering a vast range of programs to international students, including some tailor-made programs. Our programs, especially known for its high standards of teaching and considerate services have been attractive to  students from all over the world. Many world-famous universities, such as the University of Cambridge of the U.K. and the University of Western Australia, have chosen OUC to conduct tailor-made courses for their undergraduate students. Each year there are more than 1000 international students from over 30 countries pursuing their Certificate/Diploma/Bachelor's degree/Master's degree/Ph. D. in our university.

The International Education Center (IEC) of OUC, staffed with over 20 members and facilitated with cars, buses and international students' houses, provides assistance with application, enrollment procedure, accommodation, social activities and trips, peer supports and other administrative affairs. The IEC warmly welcomes students from all over the world to come for study or for a visit.

Introduction to the Chinese Business Program (CBP)

This program was composed in cooperation with German Universities, especially University of Applied Sciences Rosenheim. It has been running very successfully since September 1997.Since 2006 our overseas partner is the University of Applied Sciences Dortmund/Germany. We have enrolled and trained more than 500 international students since then. In each term we offer 7 courses for international students who are interested in Chinese Business. (Course description is attached herewith). Each program starts with the opening of our academic term at Ocean University of China. In either spring term (starting in March) or autumn term (starting in September), the students will study fifteen weeks with us. Among the fifteen weeks, there is a two-week break during International Labor Day or National Day (around Oct. 1st) to allow students to tour around in China. The courses offered are as follows:

We also arrange guest lecturers from famous companies, banks and other institutes to enlarge our students' view on the situation in the fields of Chinese economy and culture. Every week, there will be an excursion to local companies such as Haier, Hisense,  Attorney's Office and other relevant places to show the students how the real business is done here in China. Many foreign companies, such as Qingdao Degussa Chemical Co. Ltd., Lucent Technologies Qingdao, and Maersk Container Industrial Qingdao Ltd. are also on our list of excursions.

Students trained in our program will get a certificate after completing the courses. Now many of our students graduated are working in the multi-national companies such as Siemens and Lucent. The reason why our students are highly demanded is that they are trained by experienced experts or professors in the field of business.
